The Prouty, Dartmouth Cancer Center’s premier fundraising event, hosted its first-ever Prouty Community Day & Walk on Sunday, June 8.
“Volunteerism feeds my soul. It provides me a vehicle through which I can hopefully leave my community a little better than when I found it,” said Stevens. “I am grateful to the Manchester Police Athletic League for allowing me the space to work with high risk/justice impacted youth and contribute to my community in a meaningful way.”
“As we heard this morning, as we were talking about what the impact of potential cuts to the AmeriCorps program would be, it’s not going to save money,” said Senator Shaheen. “What it’s going to do is downshift those costs to local communities, and it’s going to actually cost us more. So this is all a foolhardy effort.”
“The need is greater than ever. We have seen more families experiencing hunger and we’re hopeful that the Seacoast community will step up to help our neighbors. Last year Gather distributed fresh, healthy groceries to 125,000 people, an increase of 50% over the last two years. We need to make our largest food drive a big success to address the increased need,” says Gather Executive Director Anne Hayes.
Among programs in the crosshairs are the funding sources for over 1,000 Community Action Agencies across the country — including five in New Hampshire – that were created through the landmark Economic Opportunity Act in 1964. The agencies administer anti-poverty initiatives such as Head Start and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program and distribute food to pantries and soup kitchens.
