The Soapbox: Fur cruelty still exists

Fur-Free Friday, held each year nationwide on the day after Thanksgiving, began in the 1980s to shine a light on the cruelty of the fur trade. Major retailers and designers stopped selling fur, and many of us dared to hope that this industry of suffering was finally ending. But the truth is, the cruelty has not stopped.

Rep. Brian Labrie argues that the so-called “Public Employee Choice Act” is about freedom. But true workplace freedom has never meant forcing workers to negotiate alone against the power and resources of the state. In New Hampshire — a place where the middle class was built through solidarity, fairness, and collective voice — this proposal would undermine the very system that has delivered stability and economic mobility for tens of thousands of families.

If the ACA goes away I’ll have to pay an extra $230 a month. This isn’t feasible. I’m already paying out of pocket for doctor visits. It just feels like I’m being punished for coming from a background without having family support. I’m doing all the things I’m supposed to – I work, I go to school, I lead, and its just not enough.

As a former Manchester middle school counselor, a state representative, and a taxpayer, these  numbers scare me — and they should scare you too. Governor Kelly Ayotte’s private school  vouchers are draining funding from public schools, which serve over 160,000 students across  the state.

New Hampshire’s transportation system does not run on back-room deals, campaign slogans, or eleventh-hour improvisation. It runs—when it runs well—on public process, engineering reality, and basic honesty with taxpayers. That is why the Executive Council’s latest clash over the Ten-Year Transportation Plan should concern every Granite Stater, and especially those of us in Manchester.

Simply put, New Hampshire gambling revenues are up while lottery and liquor store revenues are down. The Big Con here is the state’s willingness to trade long term gambling problems and ruined lives for short term mo’money. Desperate people do desperate things. It’s not if but when New Hampshire will be hit with a gambling scandal. Underage teens around the country are already registering to bet online with personal info “borrowed” from an uncle.

We’re in the final days of this year’s municipal election cycle, and at Tuesday night’s mayoral debate, Mayor Ruais made several claims about his record that caught my attention. Most were technically true, but as an Alderman with a front-row seat at City Hall, I know much of what he touts is loaded with nuance. When glossed over in 30-second debate responses or simplified for headlines, his claims become misleading.

Darkness vs. Light

I was recently listening to a friend talk about how dark the nation – and the world – has become. I couldn’t help but agree with him – it seems that we are living in a very dark place as of late. I do not remember a time when there was so much negativity or darkness as we have now. We rarely see positive stories on the news, and social media is constantly filled with negative stories and the “keyboard warriors” who tend to leave nasty comments.

I will be opposing HB 639, the so-called “cryptocurrency freedom” bill now before the Senate. Despite its libertarian rhetoric of innovation and “financial opportunity,” the measure is a blueprint for deregulation that would invite precisely the abuses and inequalities that scholar Finn Brunton warns of in his recent New York Times essay on the true nature of cryptocurrency.

Who’s under the mask? Tricks, treats, and the real monsters among us

I say this because I’ve seen it with my own eyes: a line of people in ski masks on Main Street, holding signs telling others to “go back to where you came from,” “no gays allowed,” “we hate Jews” – and the list goes on. Is that their “trick”? To show up, hide their faces, and try to scare people with their hate? Because, honestly, it looks less like a trick and more like cowardice dressed up as protest.
