The wage gap hurts women’s ability to save for retirement and reduces their total Social Security and pension benefits, making older women more likely to live in poverty. In the past two years, there have been efforts on a national scale to close the gap, including the Paycheck Fairness Act, which seeks to strengthen the Equal Pay Act of 1963, by making it easier for workers to challenge employers on the basis of pay discrimination.
